‘Insurgent’ Opening Could Be Bigger Than ‘Divergent’

Variety reports that “Insurgent,” the sequel to last year’s “Divergent” is tracking for an even bigger opening weekend! The second installment in the film adaptations of Veronica Roth’s best-selling YA novels looks to be headed for a $57 million dollar opening weekend. “Divergent” made $54.6 million in it’s first weekend and took in $150.9 million in the U.S. and $288.7 million worldwide.

The bigger tracking numbers are probably due to a number of factors including star Shailene Woodley’s roles in other popular YA movies like “The Spectacular Now” and “The Fault In Our Stars.” Several of her co-stars are also enjoying success outside of the franchise. Miles Teller starred in the Oscar-winning film “Whiplash” and can be seen as Mr. Fantastic in the upcoming, “Fantastic Four.” Ansel Elgort starred alongside Shailene in “The Fault In Our Stars” and also appeared in “Men, Women & Children” with Adam Sandler and Jennifer Garner. Theo James has two indie films already in post-production. He also recently filmed “The Secret Scripture” in Ireland which is already getting Oscar buzz and he will film “Black Lung” with Amanda Seyfried later this year.
