Theo James Begins Filming ‘The Secret Scripture’ in Ireland

Excited to report that principal photography has begun in Ireland on Theo James’ next film, “The Secret Scripture.” Directed by Jim Sheridan (My Left Foot, In The Name of the Father), the adaptation of Sebastian Barry’s novel is expected to film in Dublin, Wicklow and Sligo through the beginning of March. The movie also stars the legendary Vanessa Redgrave (Julia, Foxcatcher), Rooney Mara (The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, Her), Eric Bana (Munich, Star Trek), Jack Reynor (Transformers: Age of Extinction, What Richard Did) and Aidan Turner (The Hobbit series, Being Human).

“The Secret Scripture” is the story of 100 year old Roseanne, who has spent half of her life in a mental institution which is about to be shut down. Dr. Grene is tasked with deciding whether Roseanne is well enough to leave the institution that has been her home or be transferred to another facility. The story moves back and forth between narratives of these two characters and makes us question how much of a person’s history depends on who is doing the telling. Young Roseanne will be played by Mara, Old Roseanne by Redgrave and Dr. Grene by Eric Bana. Theo James will play Catholic priest Father Gaunt whose impact on Roseanne’s life is huge and changes her forever. The story takes place in Ireland during the political and religious conflicts of the 1920s and 30s. Not surprisingly, the book reads like poetry as Barry is also a poet and includes beautiful language and descriptions of Sligo, Ireland, where the story is set. This should be a very lovely film to watch and has some truly brilliant talent to tell the story.

This is a very different role for Theo James who is best known for the “Divergent” series and we can’t wait to see what he can do! “Insurgent,” the sequel to “Divergent,” is scheduled for release on March 20, 2015 and “The Secret Scripture” is expected to film until early that month. It looks like 2015 will be another busy and exciting year for Theo and we look forward to seeing what happens for him next!
